The U.S. Foos and Drugs Administration defines a Medical Device as “any instrument, apparatus, machine, software, implant, or similar article that is intended for use in the diagnosis, treatment, or prevention of a disease or medical condition.”

Based on the level of risk they pose to patients, the FDA has classified medical devices into three categories.

  • Class I: These are low-risk devices that are subject to general controls such as adherence to good manufacturing practices (GMP), proper device labeling, registration with the FDA, and reporting adverse events. Examples include elastic bandages, examination gloves, and handheld surgical instruments.
  • Class II: These are moderate-risk devices that are subject to more stringent regulatory requirements. Other than general controls, they also need specific performance standards as defined by the FDA. Examples include powered wheelchairs, infusion pumps, and certain diagnostic tests such as X-rays.
  • Class III: These are considered to be the highest-risk devices and are subject to the most rigorous regulatory controls by the FDA. Typically these devices include the ones that are implanted in the body. Examples include implantable pacemakers, heart valves, etc.

Active medical devices are the ones that rely on power sources such as electricity or battery to operate. Examples of active medical devices include Implantable cardiac pacemakers, Insulin pumps, Ventilators, ECG, Ultrasound, MRI Machines, Deep brain stimulation machines, etc.
