    THE CHALLENGE

Machines being exposed to dust in any operating conditions would affect their performance and most importantly, air filters being the engine’s first line of defense, one can guess when the filter needs to be changed. But the main problem would be the decisions made during the guessing stage such as the filter being changed too early or too late leading to a loss in all the aspects. MANN+HUMMEL was in need of a solution, which helps the vehicle owners to track the performance of the engine’s air filters through a digital medium.

    SOLUTION OVERVIEW

Senzit is MANN-HUMMEL's intelligent filter solution for industrial vehicles. It brings actionable insights regarding air filter health among other information, which is customized for unique operating conditions. The sensor data is uploaded to the cloud, a real-time data analysis is performed and a calculation of the remaining filter service life is delivered on a compatible mobile app

HOW [x]cube LABS LEVERAGED AWS TECH.

[x]cube has partnered with MANN+HUMMEL and suggested going with Amazon Web Services (AWS) as the only platform that could meet all its needs.

The IoT streaming data pipeline is composed of AWS IoT, Amazon Kinesis Streams, and AWS Lambda serverless computers. MANN+HUMMEL evaluated other streaming data tools, including Apache Kafka, but found them difficult to manage and scale. The company did not want to worry about managing the software stack and a fleet of servers, so instead chose Amazon Kinesis because it is fully managed.

AWS DynamoDB was used to store the IoT devices' data.

AWS Lambda allows processing the streaming data without needing to provision or manage any servers. Lambda collects data from the Kinesis pipeline and loads it into AWS DynamoDB. Lambda runs code only when triggered by data via integrations with Kinesis, and it charges for compute processing only when the code is running.

Lamda also allows exposing REST APIs for Web and Mobile Applications. AWS API Gateway was used to configure all API endpoints to Lambda functions.

Authentication and authorization layer using AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM) and AWS CloudWatch to trigger events and to store the application logs.

    BENEFITS

    • Increased shelf-life of filters
    • Reduced potential vehicle breakdown with timely alerts
